LA CUENTA QUE NO SE ABRE

Challenge

Behaviour change — Working-class Colombian mothers aged 30-50 who manage household finances informally — hiding cash in jars, mattresses, and shoe boxes — and who distrust formal banking institutions due to generational experiences of bank failures and hidden fees in the 1990s

Insight

In Colombian working-class households, mothers have been the invisible financial architects for decades, managing complex informal savings systems passed down from their own mothers — a practice born from the 1999 banking crisis that destroyed trust in institutions. These women are not financially illiterate; they are financially traumatized. They run sophisticated budgets using physical envelopes labeled by expense category, yet the banking system treats them as 'unbanked' people who need education, when what they actually need is acknowledgment that their system already works.

Idea

Instead of inviting these women into the bank's system, bring the bank into theirs — by creating physical pop-up 'banks' inside local markets and tiendas that replicate the envelope system these mothers already use, translating their informal categories into formal savings accounts that mirror their existing logic.

Execution

Banco Austral partnered with neighborhood tiendas and local markets in Bogotá, Medellín, and Cali to install 'La Cuenta Que No Se Abre' — 'The Account That Doesn't Open' — a provocation that played on the double meaning of 'abrir una cuenta' (to open an account) and the fact that these women never open bank accounts. Each installation featured a large transparent safe filled with labeled envelopes mimicking the mothers' home systems: 'arriendo,' 'mercado,' 'emergencias,' 'los niños.' A Banco Austral advisor sat not behind a desk but beside the women at a kitchen table replica, translating each envelope into a corresponding micro-savings pocket within a single account. The entire onboarding happened in the market, took under ten minutes, and the account interface on mobile replicated the colored envelope system. Local radio spots featured real mothers explaining their envelope systems, ending with: 'My bank finally learned what I already knew.'
